Psarantonis was born in 1942 at the village Anogia in Rethymnon and has a long career as a musician of Music of Crete. Psarantonis starts learning how to play the lyre when he is nine years old. At the age of thirteen, he plays at his first wedding reception in Sisarha. The years to follow, Psarantonis plays the lyre and sings with a distinct passion, sensitivity imposing his own faddish style and by the time he turns sixteen he is already considered a great lyrist and singer in Crete. In 1964, he makes his first recording of the famous “Eskeftika na s’ arnitho”; his personal composition and lyrics inspired by his childhood. What follows is a series of other albums – mainly during 1965-75 – that included songs such as: “To ohi me’ to stoma mou”, “Efiges ena vradi”, “Giada’ sai nihta skotini”, and many more that to these days are viewed as landmarks in the history of Cretan music. From 1980-90, Psarantonis continues to record albums while performing abroad in countries like Germany, France, Australia and the United States. Each one of his performances results to the audiences admiration and love; audiences that are not consisted solely by Cretan immigrants but also by people of the arts and literature. The latter have only good comments to make about this fine lyrist and singer from Crete who manages to express contemporary feelings using a tradition as old as Cretan music is. At the same time, he participates to all sorts of social and cultural local and international events. The simplicity and directness of his recordings brings back memories of special musical moments. It should be noted that some of the songs are sung by Psarantonis daughter Niki and that playing the lute is Giannis Xsilouris that has contributed to the success of these songs.
